Looking for advice on writing/using fills on a singing song. I know you would want to add them at the end of the vocal line, but trying to figure out, from there, should I be targeting the first note of the fill be the last note of the vocal line and ending on the first note of the next line, like a bridge between the lines?
I really like what @BanjoBen did in “This is my Fathers World” I play at church a lot, and it would be nice to learn a strategy to adding them.

I’m going to do a lesson on this very thing @jgb2008 soon, probably more of a live gathering so we can take questions. One thing I’m conscious of, or try to be, is what the melody note is on the next vocal line. I try, in general, not to finish my fill on the same note as the next vocal line. In doing this, the vocal and the mandolin fill can create brief and interesting harmonies.
When I’m thinking about fills in songs like you mentioned, I often approach as me singing back to the vocal with my instrument. To me, it’s my favorite thing to do on the mandolin!
