Clever lyrics, good musicianship & a banjo. You can’t ask for much more!
Meanwhile, you said “it sounds like bluegrass.” I’m not arguing with you, but it re-opens up a very old discussion: Is it Bluegrass? New Grass Revival wasn’t, until it was.
Since none of the songs mention the old home place, Ma, Pa, biscuits, being lonely, partying with the neighbors, she done him wrong, he done her wrong, a passionate murder or dogs, it might not be bluegrass. It might be what some folks consider “bluegrass parody.” Others might consider it just an extension of the old minstrel shows, with their comic characters and novelty songs.
Personally, I solved this problem for myself by simply calling it “banjo music.”
That way I only have to keep two genres straight, Banjo Music & Other.
