Even On Vacation…

To my music teacher (who I wish was on here) I’ll have you know that even though I have been without my mandolin for over 3 weeks now (2 weeks scuba diving, one week into a 3 week trip to Italy) I actually THOUGHT ABOUT the circle of fifths today and how this can help my mandolin playing. Okay, what I was REALLY doing was playing with this new app I found but I think it will help me understand the circle of fifths and apply some of the theory to my mandolin playin’. As much as I am enjoying my travels I miss my mando!

I never travel without my instrument anymore. It was getting too unbearable the last few times I did!

So what’s the app ?

I have a simple solution for that. I never travel. Literally. I stay home when my family goes on vacation :joy:

Or else what is the point? It would be unbearable for them. Isn’t that why they call it a “get away”?? :joy:

@Mason_Crone now that makes no sense. :slightly_frowning_face: you gotta go on music trips! To a festival or a show or a contest. Try it!

It’s actually called “Circle of Fifths” in the app store. The icon looks a little like a target, a circle within a circle. there’s nothing magic about it though it is an electronic representative of a large, paper training aide my music teacher had. Pick a key and it will show you the major and relative minor chords. I think it also shows the number of sharps and flats as you change keys. Like I said, nothing special but better than carrying paper notes around.

Oooh, I couldn’t do that. I’m retired, wife’s retired, we travel a lot.

I agree. We travel a lot. I actually did a music trip in April, went to @banjoben Cabin Camp in Nashville. Had a blast! I just found a small bluegrass festival in Wisconsin that I should be able to get to (we’re home in late July till early Sep.) Hope to find some jamming opportunities there also.

Yeah, it isn’t easy. One time the gate agent told me I had to gate check my mandolin. I’m sure she thought it was a guitar. I was nice and took the little pink tag…then went to the airplane with the mandolin and asked if I could put it in the overhead. (I used to fly the very same type of jet for Delta Connection so I knew it fit.) I pretty much gave up on taking it with me when I fly since I know I cannot win that battle every time. (It’s technically larger than a legal carry on….but most bags carried on are oversized anyway.) Ah well.

I would, but I’m the only person in my family interested in music trips, they always go on boring trips haha. I’ll start going on music trips someday hopefully.

Why does that not surprise me?

@Dragonslayer You talking to me?

@Mason_Crone no, I was talking to the statue behind you
