Electric Banjo

Just curious if anyone plays an electric banjo, and if so, what set up you use. I have a Goldtone EMB banjo that I bought from Janet Davis Music probably 20 years ago. It sounds amazing through an acoustic amp. I use an Aeros looper pedal with some backing tracks uploaded and a Beatbuddy that can really make jamming alone fun. You can practically be a one man band🤣

Whelp, I can’t help but be overwhelmed by the excitement and passionate discussion that resulted from this post. Obviously, electric banjos are about as popular round here as a screen door on a submarine.

What kind of pickup are you using?

It’s the standard EMB Goldtone. It has a Humbucker under the head and a single coil near the neck. You get more of a traditional banjo sound through the single coil, but in the middle is a nice warm sound when playing clean, through an acoustic amp. Thanks for asking.

On a side note, I have played it with some distortion and strummed it like a guitar played in open G tuning. For example, a lot of George Thorogood and stones songs were played in open g tuning. With the electric banjo and an effects pedal, you could play Foggy Mountain Breakdown clean with finger picks, then hit the distortion, switch to a flat pick and crank out some Bad to the Bone or Jumping Jack Flash! It’s a lot of fun.
