I just came across this video this evening. This song was on Dolly’s album The Grass is Blue. She sure can put together a good bluegrass band!
Dolly Parton and an All-Star Bluegrass Band
Like so many jobs in life, “it’s not what you know, but who you know.”
Imagine if she had to run an ad in a trade paper asking for bluegrass musicians to come and audition!
That’s some line up for sure. I bet they were well paid for that gig.
Who’s the dobro player?
Gerry Douglas
Speaking of Jerry Douglas and great bluegrass bands, here he is as a teenager playing with J.D. Crowe, Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs and Bobby Slone.
It might be the first Bluegrass Supergroup, after Monroe/Flatt/Scruggs. I love the album “JD Crowe and the New South” with these members. The only real issue I see seems to be their style in fashion (granted in 1975 my Mom was making a lot of my clothes so I have a feeling I shared their fashion sense in my church clothes).
Omg, yes!!! Same here…
I even had clothes that blended in perfectly with the couch cover and I could disappear by sitting on it
JD’s and Tony’s haircuts…
If you haven’t already listened to them, you should check out the JD Crowe and the New South at the Red Slipper Lounge tapes. If you have already listened to them, you should listen to them again.
There are a few different ones out there, but here is a couple of them.

Interesting first song on that KET (Kentucky Educational Tv) prodution. Ending lyrics (if I heard right):“If the ladies were squirrels with high bushy tails, I’d load up my shotgun with rock salt and nails.” I wonder if anyone had issues with the lyrics.
Folks didn’t have all that many “issues” back then…
