Quarter note triplets are some low hanging fruit that spice up our playing, and can immediately transform the attitude of our solos & improv. Let’s learn some uses for quarter note triplets on mandolin, and apply them to a common fiddle tune!

Hello, this lesson was blowing my mind because of my understanding of triplets in the past and confusion from different sources. I have books from the 80’s stating a triplet is 3 equal notes for every beat. Not every 2 beats. And I have an electronic metronome that puts triplets as 3 notes per beat. From what your saying is that there would be 6 total notes in a 4/4 measure of quarter note triplets. But I thought it would be 12.
I guess I was putting in 8th note triplets instead of 1/4 note triplets. Wow, I need to re-think this concept. LOVE THE SITE - Thank you

This was a very fun lesson Ben! I now have a much better understanding of 1/4 note triplets and how to use them.

Very neat. Have heard this but never knew exactly what it was? Are there any implications for banjo doing this?

I’d say absolutely use those triplets on banjo!

We’ll see if @Michael_Mark can dig up any video examples of folks doing these on banjo, though probably best to start a new thread.
