Discuss the Mandolin lesson: Pick Angle

No need for a protractor…just watch this video to hold it right (get it?).

Hi Ben. Can you provide any insight for me about using the backside of the pick on the downstroke and the front side on the upstroke? That is what I’ve been doing with my guitar playing lately and it has helped. As I am just getting started with the mando I would like to use the same technique but don’t want to start down a bad road. You guys mentioned using a flat pick method and front side of the pick on the downstrokes but didn’t mention this last one, the one I have been using. Thanks Ben.

Great question, there are players who do this but it is more rare and definitely changes the tone. I seem to notice that folks who do this do it because of the way their thumb joint is. In that case it’s fine because it causes them to play better, but I wouldn’t do it just to do it.
