Discuss the Mandolin lesson: Jamming the Major & Minor Pentatonic

The pentatonic scale is a powerful thing, as it provides some “safe” notes to play in many contexts. In this lesson we’ll jam over the 1 & 6 minor chords in various keys!

Thanks, nice lesson. I’ve been slacking off lately and this one has me back in the saddle again. -d.

“Here’s when I act like I can hear what you’re playing and I congratulate you.”

HA! Ben’s keeping it real.

Well dang, Ben! I spent 30 minutes on this lesson and I think I’d be able to fake out some people and make them think I really knew what I was doing on mandolin.

This is exactly like what I was telling you years ago when I took a few minor pentatonic lessons from a guitar teacher and I was suddenly playing along with every blues song out there.

I don’t really plan on playing mandolin very often, so this lesson is exactly what I need for when our jam’s mandolin player is out. A few chops and pentatonic fills will get the job done.

Thanks!

Ben, This is a great lesson showing the movement of scales up and down the neck. It’s a small step (not a leap) to incorporating the blue notes to get to really sounding good. I’m using the knowledge I gain from the mandolin and applying that knowledge to the guitar.
