Discuss the Mandolin lesson: Cold Frosty Morning

https://banjobenclark.com/lessons/cold-frosty-morning-mandolin-intermediate

I happen to love cold frosty mornings, though this tune was written in remembrance of the gruesome battle of Culloden Moor in 1746. It starts in A minor, then onto a major sound. We’ll learn a harmony part, too, and work on our improvisation using target notes!

Just what Texas needed this week :slight_smile:

Thanks! It’s been SUPER cold in Nashville and I don’t keep my little Cabin heated very warm. It was in the mid 50’s when I recorded and my body heat on the mando caused it to go out of tune a bit. I noticed after listening back and said, “oh well.”

Hi Ben, will you be doing a banjo version of this by any chance?

Yeah, I’d love to…may do that this week!

Such a great breakdown of this lesson @BanjoBen.

I enjoyed it so much and appreciate your “unintentional” stick to it determination to be in the spirit of the title by doing the lesson if a frosty cabin! :cold_face::cloud_with_rain:

By the way… thanks for sharing the pics as they were really nice and so fitting!

Great lesson!

Is there a Dorian Scale for other keys other than A? Perhaps a G Dorian scale? Example: G, A, bB,C , D, E, F
Also, do all other major scales have a Mixolydian version of that scale?

Thanks, Ben! Cool lesson.-- Mando Mitch

Precisely, that’s exactly right. All the scales exist for each key!

@msreid

HI Michelle.

Each scale can be played in different modes

Dorian, Lydian, Mixolydian etc. are different “modes” of a scale.

This guy does a pretty good job of explaining the modes.

Would it be too corny to say that none are as appealing as A-Dorian?

I know how irritating it is to get out of pitch because of tempature. Happened to me one time ON STAGE.

If you play outside it can be a chase the whole time, especially if conditions are changing.

@Mike_R - I don’t think your comment is corny at all.

Then again, this is coming from someone who always messes up putting the wrong tops back on mason jars… a genuine Mix-o-lyd-ian.

:thinking::stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Now that is just too far… sorry!
