Let’s learn 6 hot licks that are built out of the closed chop chord, which means we can easily take them wherever we want!

This lesson reminds me of sitting down with the guitar as a kid and learning the Chuck Berry licks, making them my own and then using bits and pieces of those licks in every key for the rest of my life. These mando licks will come in super handy. I’m already jamming on a coupe of them. Great lesson!

Very nice!! Where do you typically fit these in so that the rest of the players don’t get annoyed? For example, starting with measure 7 in an A part or in a turnaround? What’s the etiquette for licks? I just play along with birds & critters outdoors and am quite ignorant about jamming with other people.

Daniel, I typically look for two places… First, where there is a gap in the lead (voice or otherwise). Second when going to a change (i.e. chord change or something like verse to chorus). If I am playing with folks that play lots of fills, then I typically play less fills.

I don’t know that the above is “right”, but it seems to work well. I also like looking for licks that echo or reinforce whatever the lead has just done or is doing.

Ben, love the licks and I appreciate how you demonstrate how to use them, gives me a little jumping off point as I keep learning. You are fun to learn from, I think your spiritual gifting may be teaching because you have a bent for it.

“It sounded good in a trashy sorta way” describes most of my playing. :joy::joy::joy:
