Wayne Benson is equal parts shredder and instructor, and this lesson sure showcases both of those skills! Wayne teaches how our main chord shapes are a gateway to classic Monroe licks—and more than that, he discusses how we can be our own version of our mandolin heroes. Be sure to leave any questions for Wayne below, and check out the full performances he referenced as well!

I recently started working through the beginner mandolin lessons, but when I saw this lesson I couldn’t resist the urge to watch it. It was very informative and opened my eyes to those chord shapes, Thank you.

Wayne, great lesson. I wonder if you could pick any hero and use the arpeggio technique. Eg., I’m learning Brilliancy and I just noticed that Sam has based it on arpeggios. Anyway, thanks for the lesson!

Wonderful lesson. Interesting and insightful about the various inversions of triads from the chop chord shapes with the the right hand articulations get you those Monroe style bluegrass licks. Wayne’s explanations are clear and easy to understand. Only if it was as easy to get the hands to play what the brain understands.
