Ben, so is a acceptable way to think of the “chop” sound is that immediately after the strummed/stuck strings speak, finger pressure is release so it’s a slightly spoke, but nearly muted (not completely muted obviously) strum sound? It’s a very percussive sound, but with some chord tonal quality to it?
I think you are on the right track Kevin. That said, if you listen to a bunch of mandolin rhythm playing, some of it has some full tonal sound, some is just a bassy “thunk”, and some is really dry and percussive. I think there is a wide array off useful tones for a chop.
