That is generally the suggested way for alternate picking. With that said, for slower songs or passages, Ben often says do what you want.
Discuss the Mandolin lesson: Amazing Grace- Basic Melody with Charlie Belle
Yeah, I just stick to downstrokes on downbeats and upstrokes on upbeats… for me this is much easier to “feel” and stick to after training rather than thinking about every note’s time value. The problem is when I switch to fiddle and my brain still thinks the bow is a guitar pick.
That was fantastic! And fun. I think the Charlie Belle and Dad page for kids is a great idea.
This was a great beginner lesson and a wonderful opportunity to get more comfortable with learning by ear. It was fun seeing the two of you interact together, and a couple of times I got so caught up in watching you two that I missed a few things…but that’s OK, because repetition is important to learning…loved it!
What a gift you have, BB, to be able to play with your daughter. I guess I’m an “advanced beginner” and I’m working my way through the videos. Even though I’ve played at the mandolin for 30+ years I’m finally learning TO play it. This lesson was a joy to watch and learn from. I love your daughter’s enthusiasm, too!
So awesome, cutest thing ever! Gotta love it……yes sir…
Loved the video. just learning to play. Catching on quickly. Can you please send me the tab for the little run you do on saved a wretch like me and the ending? Missed seeing you at IBMA in Raleigh. Thanks so much, Warren
