Discuss the lesson: Pickalong: Big Sciota

I taught advanced versions of Big Sciota in 2016. Several folks wanted a pickalong version with more straight-ahead melody, so that’s what we’re gonna do! The first solo of each instrument follows that melody, then we begin some improvisation as the song progresses. Enjoy this tune!

This tune is so fun! I did all the instruments in one video this time due to the nature of the repetitive backup. Don’t forget you can slow it down by clicking on the gear icon. AND, the melody solos for each instrument will be released throughout the month of September. HOWEVER, I want you to work on learning it by ear before the tab is released! Learn that melody! Slow it down and give it a try!

Also, keep in mind that I already have advanced solos on the site from 2016 if you wanna dive into those.

These Pick Along lessons have been great for me. I’ve been able to simulate jamming with them. I can’t wait for the next one.

I find once I get the chords and the tune down, the “No Mandolin” soundtrack is an even better tool for me. I’ve had limited experience playing with other people, and playing along with these soundtracks makes me feel more like I’m playing with others.

My ideal lesson would be a common jam tune set up like a Pick Along, but along the lines of the “No [insert instrument here}” soundtrack. Having the chords displayed on the video, with all the other instruments playing their part, and having the opportunity to play melody and take a solo break. Basically, a simulated jam. It could be an opportunity to include some jam education, such as including some of the visual cues common in a jam.

Looking forward to the next Pick Along. Thanks!

Yep, I’ve had that idea for a while, would be very cool. I could do it but it would be a LOAD of production, for sure. Glad you’re digging the lessons!

Actually, it wouldn’t have to be: you could theoretically have an audio player thingy set up on the lesson page that would let you dynamically add or remove different instruments from the audio track. You could probably extend that to the video as well but that might require some server-side video rendering to be practical.

Do you have a software suggestion for this?

That’s what I thought. Basically tripling the production work, since you’d have to have a version for each instrument? It would be hard to justify that against 3 whole new lessons, but I can imagine just 1 “Jam Along” might light a picking fire for some people on the verge of busting into a jam.

https://github.com/heliosdesign/helios-audio-mixer looks like it would be fairly simple for your web devs to implement.

Appreciate it! I’ll let you know when I find web devs! lol

Oh I thought you had a person or so maintaining your web site lol
