Discuss the Guitar lesson: Wildwood Flower- Straight and Crosspicking

Two solos for this one! The first is a straight-ahead approach that is minimalistic yet tasty, then we dive into a crosspicking pasture and really smell the roses. Don’t forget, I have an advanced version of from years ago!

One of my favorites! I never got your advanced version up to a speed I was happy with, so these seem like they will be very good for me.

Btw, I love the D18-GE. It’s funny… the GEs used to sound so snappy, but that I am used to hearing you play the authentic, it sounds almost mellow  They have a different sound, but I love them both.

I love both those guitars so much. They are different and unique! I’ve really fallen back in love with this Golden Era recently.

Going thru the tab with your highlighting/drawing function (new?) is helpful. I can see this being a useful teaching tool. It was fun looking at that vintage version again!

Thanks, I hope so! Yep, plan to use that tool each chance I get.

That popped up on youtube for me earlier. Great stuff! In couple section he plays (including the one with the dim7 that is discussed at length), I am getting a western swing vibe from what he is playing.

When I hear this tune I wished I could play Geetar. bassgif

Loved that!!
Are there any plans for a full lesson or maybe even a Pro Picker study on Kenny? He’s become my fave guitar player currently on the scene… I’d love to hear more about his jazz influence, since that genre was such an influence on TR, too.

I’ll second that suggestion @Michael_Mark, would love to see a Pro Picker study on Kenny.

Yes, I have plans of getting him in for a PPCS!

Ben, would you recommend investing the time into learning alternate picking crosspicking for someone who has spent years and years doing down-down-up crosspicking? I can play this (and other crosspicking arrangements) pretty fluidly with DDU but it’s a struggle with alternate.

I’m not near as adamant as I used to be. It’s not that I want you to be proficient at it, but rather understand how it works. If you understand how it works, then hopefully you will be able to discern if you’re being limited by another approach, and can pull it out of the toolbox.

Thanks for the response Ben, sounds like it’s worth at least getting comfortable enough with it to be able to make an informed decision on when and whether to use it.
