Do you know how to play in Drop D? It’s time to learn and it’s so FUN! I’ll teach you how to tune to Drop D, then we’ll practice chords with a progression drill and add some killer licks, too!

Great lesson- thanks! I’ve played songs in that style for years, but learned a lot about the mechanics behind it… plenty for me to chew on and learn from here! I would LOVE to hear you break down Tony Rice’s Lonesome Reuben (in the Drop D)… probably more “advanced”- but Tony blew my mind with like a 4 min break in the middle, haha! Keep up the great work Ben!

Yes! I am looking forward to doing this lesson! I really love drop D. Angeline (the) Baker, Shady Grove, and Amazing Grace come to mind as songs that I like with drop D treatment here over the years. With drop D you sacrifice a few things, but getting that low D breooooww really makes up for a lot. I also like the interval between the low D and A strings… it opens up a lot of things.

BTW, Your D18 sounds like it has a special low end in drop D. Some guitars get loose sounding (not always a bad thing) but yours retains some good punch. That guitar is a keeper!

I was kind of in rare form recording this lesson, for whatever reason.

Ben, what a great lesson. Lots of wood shedding ahead. Can’t wait to use at the Kilgore Kamp!

I use drop D when I’m doing “Lonesome Reuben’s Train” or Bill Monroe’s “Get Up John”! Excellent Drop D material!

Hey, I really liked that song you played at the start. Do you have tabs for it? I would love to learn it!

Hi @freddy Jeremy TABs are supplied with the lesson. If you are a Gold Pick Member just scroll down the page and you’ll find TABs in TEF and PDF format

The lesson is a couple of years old, but the content is still gold! Drop D tuning adds a whole new dimension to your playing, and BanjoBen’s lesson is a great way to dive into it. He covers tuning your guitar to Drop D and guides you through chords, progressions, and even throws in some killer licks. It’s a fun and rewarding technique to explore. If you’re interested in trying out different instruments, like the bouzouki, check out this website. They have a variety of such instruments and other instruments to expand your musical horizons. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced guitarist, Drop D tuning is worth giving a shot.

Oh dear very late to this one and realise there is many ways to skin a cat as it were but watched and listened to Travis Tritt a bit and in the spirit of power chords sounds like and looks like he uses 550033 as a G.

X20001 as G7
007600 offers an A of sorts if not there long DAAC#BE what’s that some sort of A9 I guess.
