No capo on this one which means some great practice in the key of A (both minor and major!). We’ll also do a harmony part, too, which is cool…or frosty, we might say.

Sounds great. I like the harmony!
Great lesson overall! Loved the tune, the harmony, and the dorian and mixolydian scales as part of a song music! Sure to keep some of our folks step/tap dance boots occupied!
Great timing for this lesson Ben, thank you! I just heard this song yesterday on a YouTube video of Billy Strings and Bryan Sutton playing together. Billy plays banjo and Bryan plays mandolin. It is a great version that struck me when I heard it. Then this morning I login to my lifetime member account on your website and there it is! Can’t wait to get at this one. Thanks Ben and God Bless you!
Hi Ben—Is there a reason you didn’t use the “m” to designate the Am chords on screen in the rhythm part of the lesson? Too crowded? Forgot? We should know that? Or you were just checking to see if we’re paying attention? Thanks!
The “-” means minor in other notation styles, just mixing it up a bit
Thank you! That counts as my new thing learned today.
I love how you go beyond just teaching a tune. You don’t just give us a tune. You integrate theory with teaching the tune and it makes it exciting and interesting. It’s like teaching us to fish for our food for life instead of handing us a fish supper for a day! Very respectful of our potential on many levels. Indeed reflective of your skill as a wonderful teacher! You are gifted and and you obviously are using those gifts, skills, and talents in such a blessed way.
Thank you!
Judith that’s why @BanjoBen is the best teacher on the Web.
Fish Supper ? Kinda suggests your Scots ?
This is a great lesson, Ben. I love learning a little music theory while learning a tune, and the harmony is a bonus. This tune lends itself to a lot of variations. With other versions I have seen, the B part stays in A minor – no A major. Causes me to think – and learn, I hope. Thanks!
Your comment is one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received as a teacher. Thank you!
Thanks for the welcome Archie. If you mean Scots in reference to name…yes. Not what prompted the fish comment however. Just going back to the idea of fishing for a lifetime over being fed for a day.
It is a compliment well earned!
It just occurred to me that this tune is almost like a salt creek minor. Kind of interesting.
