Discuss the Banjo lesson: Worried Man Blues- Intermediate

We’ll start basic melody then add some cool ornaments to take this one up a notch! The advanced solo is in the advanced lesson section where we’ll add some Crowe licks to light it up, holla!

I second what Scott said. That is a nice, classy touch!

@BanjoBen: In watching you play the basic version slow, I noticed that on the GLick (measure 17, AND of 2 or at time stamp 4:31 of the basic melody video) you very distinctly bent the 2nd fret before sliding to the third fret. That sounds “right” for the way a banjo should sound to my ear. I suspect you cover this in a lesson that I haven’t gotten to yet, but is that bend something that is almost always used for similar phrases?

I was talking about this the other day with a picker. In all my years of being instructed by world-class banjo pickers, no one taught me this. I started doing it naturally after a long while, then realized just recently that it was a thing, which caused me to do it more. I need to create a whole lesson on it but Russ does a pretty good job here:

I love the 2-3 bend!

We banjo players have been using the microtonal scale long before Jacob Collier ever existed… :banjo:

Just curious @BanjoBen how do you get the TAB on screen and synchronised with your playing?

Thanks Ben!

Where are you talking about?

The TAB on screen. I was sure I saw notes in the TAB flashing when you played. I’ve looked again but I can’t find it. I guess it must have been when I was dreaming. gif

Oh, that was on my YouTube version where I teach the whiplash lick. Yeah, I have to manually highlight those and sync with the audio. It’s not practical to do in large portions

@BanjoBen, this is a really, really nice one! I’ve got to tell you that above and beyond that…the video editing work is outstanding! The transparent tab in white and the colored dots highlighting each note in real time is super-duperly (that’s an engineering technical term) in the Youtube whiplash intro serves to make the presentation more attractive, more compelling, and more accessible. This no doubt requires more work on your end, but I wanted you to know it is appreciated and hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Thanks! I was finally able to hire some good help and begin to do many of the things I’ve been wanting to for a long time.
