Discuss the Banjo lesson: The Katy Kluck

The Katy Kluck sounds like a great name for the backup scratch that Katy teaches us today. It has a bit of Crow in it, yeah, but no fowl there.

A bit of Crowe indeed!
Yay… right up my alley. Coming from a lot of fingerstyle/Travis/whatever one wants to call it (3 fingers and one thumb for me), this is pretty familiar feeling.

You did freak me out a bit when you (Ben) changed instruments between the first and second segment. In my mind you still had a guitar and when Katy was demoing the Kluck, I heard a high banjo noodling and was confused. It really doesn’t take much to confuse me.

Lastly, I really liked Katy’s minor third Ba da da duhhhh.

Great wee lesson Katy Lou & @BanjoBen . Eddie Collins did a Travis Pickin Lesson fairly recently on YouTube and as I recall Eddie Adcock (DVD) has his own unique version of this with some double jointed hammer-on with his ring finger. Really weird how he does this.

Always love it when Katy joins you for a lesson @BanjoBen maybe next time you’ll let Katy talk a little more.

The “Katy Cluck”, huh? I bag chicken for “The Fresh Market’s” Chuck and Chicken Tuesdays on Sundays. Saturday nights, before work Sunday, I start flapping my “wings” to get in the mood! Since I have the “copyright” on the cluck, she can send the royalties to me! Ha!

What a joy to hear this technique and sound cross over to banjo playing;
I have often been accused of playing my banjo more in the style of guitar -leaning more toward melodic runs and solos than the syncopated melodic obfuscation of scruggs style banjo ,so I feel some justicication. now.
I learned Travis style picking first on guitar in the Peter ,Paul and Mary era of the 60s; folk,pop, blues, rock are more comfortable styles for me but am getting more comfortable with bleugrass;
NEW grass - provides innovation in introduction of alternate techniques and styles to use with bluegrass instruments ala Sirius XM radio’s Bluegrass Junction station

Hi There Tennessee Texas Friends,
This is a lot of fun to learn! First I thought" yea right" This is beyond me but, then it started to come together.
Next thing you know I will be overplaying it and will get the eye.

For the past year I’ve been working on backup. The Katy Kluck lesson came at a perfect time. I’ve actually progressed better than I expected. If you’re wondering how I know I’m getting it, my wife didn’t leave the room as I practiced last night. And she commented that what I was playing sounded nice.

I’d have to ask, what’s in her thoughts. Just in my nature :rofl:

The wife test is a serious indicator, and can brighten your day. Good job ! I have been working on backup as well realizing it is about 7/8 of playing well with others.
