Discuss the Banjo lesson: O Holy Night

https://banjobenclark.com/lessons/o-holy-night-banjo

O Holy Night is one of my favorite songs of all time, regardless of genre. We’re in drop-C tuning for this one. Though it’s slow, it is challenging, but extremely rewarding!

Hi Ben! Could you possibly do a mandolin solo for O Holy Night? Thanks!

I’ll put it on the list for this year, thanks!

Ahem…which year for the mando version?

Love this banjo version! I need to start working on it now though!

Thank you for this lesson! I am slowly trying to learn it before Christmas–

In measure 17 for the E minor why does the ring finger still need to be down on the 9th fret if we are not pinching it? But if we do keep our ring finger there then can we just pinch those first three strings vs going to the fourth string with our index? Thanks again!

Sure, you can do do that. What’s driving my positioning there is where I come from out of the C chord in 15-16, but your way should work.

I am so grateful that you made this arrangement available, Ben. This song takes me back to Christmas Eve candlelight services, the choir and the soloists whose voices still ring true for me each holiday season. I was able to express my thanks and gratitude by sharing this clip with them this year. To say this was a challenge and a stretch for me is to put it mildly. I am humbled by your talent and so fortunate to learn from your gifts to the community. https://youtu.be/_5UPdeSpXWM

Hunter, really nice work! That’s not an easy arrangement to nail down, but you pulled it off beautifully. Well done!

Dude that was great, @heley! That song takes me back, too. Good stuff. Like Mark says, it’s not an easy arrangement but you got it!

Ben, Thanks to you and Mark for the kind feedback. I just wanted you to know that I have received so many compliments from people who truly appreciate your arrangement. I think hearing this familiar song played on a less familiar instrument gives them a whole new way to experience it, yet still taps into the tradition and nostalgia of the season. Beautifully done, Ben. Oh, and I’m trying to send them all your way! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Thank you so much for providing this! Is it possible to provide a visual of how to place the left hand finger placement? It is hard to pick up with the video. Thank you!

Hi @zacharyjcole welcome to @BanjoBen 's Forum. This is an advanced lesson but it is not too difficult to figure out using the TAB

Hey @zacharyjcole! Welcome to the forum!

Did you happen to check the slow lesson video? Ben’s left hand placement is pretty visible in it. If that’s not getting it, let us know which parts you’re having trouble with and we can post something more specific.

Hey @BanjoBen, just wanted to say thanks for this lesson it has been a lot of fun learning it. It has also been challenging, I don’t totally have it down as well as I would like. I wanted to share the video of my daughter and I playing it together.https://youtu.be/NZ504AAd6OA?si=Hda8tdb6DKO5JK6T
