Discuss the Banjo lesson: Nothing But The Blood for Banjo

Start up high with some fluff, finish 'er down low with some sweet drive and melodic tricks! This one is tons of fun to play. Grab some friends and work it up!

Ben, I think your verse video is not all there. It’s only playing about 18 seconds.

Ok while the arrangement was spot on as usual…can I give a special shout out to that awwwwesome shirt!!! Please tell me there’s a Cardinals Banjo shirt somewhere on the storefront :D.

Haha, thanks! Actually there’s a Double-A minor league team in the Cardinals organization, the Springfield Cardinals. They have a bluegrass night each summer. The last two years I’ve been honored to sponsor it. Jake actually threw out the first pitch this year. It was a spectacle, lemme tell ya.

are you playing that same backup pattern through the whole song, and if so does it fit over all of the chords?

I do the same pattern for most of the verse, but go into other backup during the choruses. During the verse I switch patterns/shape when it goes to the D chord (essentially a quarter noted walkup).

how do you do a quarter noted walkup?

I’m having great trouble doing the pull off from 11 to 10
Because my action is fairly high and I keep hitting the string above it, what should I do?

Can you try pulling off in the opposite direction?

I reccomend you practice pull offs laser focused, painfully slow for a few minutes a day, preferably a single measure in a loop. I always do that to get my brain to understand the movement and gradually increase speed

You can also try lowering your action:
