Discuss the Banjo lesson: Nine Pound Hammer- Advanced

I’ve done a basic version of the bluegrass classic, and had an overwhelming response to do an advanced version. Here it is! This is a great version because it really works in some melodic ideas while presenting the melody in a different way. I know you’ll enjoy it!

So, what happens when you spend a bunch of time learning an arrangement like this and then you go to a jam and someone does the song in a different key?

On banjo? Move the capo. Of course, the longer you’re on my site, the more you will see me prioritize playing solos by ear and creating your own.

I’m saying this 10 years late, but early on in this lesson you say something about making a dip in the melody as a more advanced way of reaching out to the melody. That reminded me that I wanted to make a request for maybe eventually a video on what you would consider to be more advanced things to work towards and practice on. Also maybe a little bit on what you would consider an advanced technique.

So I’m kind of revisiting this as a guy that I’m playing with now (Steve Wilson who was a fellow Montana cabin camper btw) and I are learning it. However, I really just can’t play the solo without tab but when we play, for my solo I pretty much do a boring beginner version of this. So, should I just try to get solos like this down pat or just work more on playing simpler stuff and the complexity will come with time? Should I really even worry too much about playing these individual pieces like this one?
