At my Fall 2024 Texas Cabin Camp, Bill Evans gave the banjo campers a crash course in melodic and single-string playing! This session is a great introduction for any Scruggs-style oriented players who would love to dip their toes into the waters of melodic and single-string. Bill teaches the campers scales and licks to get them playing right away, and also briefly discusses the history of melodic and single-string banjo playing throughout the lesson.

I was at this camp but missed this session. I’m practicing the heck out of it now though. Thanks Ben. Your guest instructors are slowly getting me better day by day. I even have a callous growing on my pinky now.

I’m practicing this without looking at tabs, the same way I started learning guitar many years ago. I think Ben’s correct that in order to really become good we need to wean ourselves from tab. I think it’s really important to try and learn by connecting my fingers to the sounds instead of connecting my fingers to the tab. What I’m doing with Bill’s lesson here is looking at a portion of the lesson video, practicing those measures until I need to look at the video again to correct myself or add the next measures. Bravo
