Discuss the Banjo lesson: How to Play in C!

https://banjobenclark.com/lessons/how-to-play-in-c-banjo-intermediate

Can you learn to play banjo in open C position? Yes you CAN! I created this lesson as an introductory (but certainly not shallow) guide to get you kickstarted playing in the tremendously fun key of C. We’ll use a 3-level version of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” as our example, but the point is not to learn the breaks—rather, the actual process behind writing them.

About to sit down with this lesson now. Going by the preview video, the coolest thing to me is the confirmation it’s giving me that I’ve been heading in the right direction on my own. I’m basically already playing most of the stuff demonstrated in the preview at jams (still hearing ol’ Tex Critter’s voice in my head.) I guess I learned it from some of your previous lessons like Battle Hymn of the Republic, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, and who knows what else.

It’s nice to know the time I spent on those lessons got me more than just learning 1 song.

“THEY SYSTEM” would work in any key. Great structure for how to do it and what skills to develop. Thank you!

I decided to accept the challenge at the end of the lesson and use the tools to play a song in C that I’d normally play in G. As best I can recall, I’ve never attempted to play I’ll Fly Away in C, so here’s my attempt.

This video gives you everything you need to break away from tab. It has plenty of foundational knowledge, with just enough licks thrown in to keep it fun and interesting, yet not overwhelming. I’d consider this a must learn lesson for anyone serious about playing at jams.

First of all, that banjo sounds killer…YOU are pulling some great tone from it.

Second of all…holy smokes, that’s EXACTLY what this lesson is meant to produce! Very encouraging for me to see, and I’m sure for others.

Well, it’s a Twanger, so… but thanks!

Yeah, this is such a great lesson! I hope I’m conveying to the other members just how good this one is. If anyone is busy learning a specific song, stop what you’re doing and really absorb the info in this one. This is like a fundamental lesson.

I sort of ventured off on my own and found melodies in C just going through a hymn book, now knowing the system, it has been more helpful. Great lesson! Thank you!

Best lesson ever - breaking free of the tabs! It’s really a better system. Thanks Ben.
