This ol’ favorite may seem to present a couple banjo challenges: a waltz in the key of C. Hook up the wagon, Honey, cause we’re headed for Home on the Range!

Me gusta!
What’s really cool to me is that I understand what your left hand is doing as a result of what I learned at the last camp. This is no longer about just learning what the tabs are and repeating it. It’s about understanding WHY you’re doing what you’re doing.
That’s really exciting!
Wow @BanjoBen this takes me back to my childhood - Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. We are talkin 1953 -54 how did you come up with this old cowboy song Nice banjo arr. BTW. Gonna have fun with this on for sure
Love this chord lesson @BanjoBen especially that long reach D7 chord. I didn’t think I could play that sequence when I first looked at it but it all just came together so easily. Need to work on it more but it’s time to wrap up for today.
Ben, in measure 30, why change your left hand position at all to get the 3rd fret on the 1st string. The pinky’s already there, right? I don’t see an advantage to doing it.
Ah! but what does @BanjoBen do next in measure 31?
He moves up the neck to fret the 2nd string with his middle finger.
The more you work through Ben’s lessons the more you will find he has certain go-to fingerings. This is one of them. Index on the 1st at the 3rd fret Middle/Ring on the 2nd string at the 5th fret. Alan Munde uses similar fingerings.
After a while you do this on autopilot,
I play that 3rd fret with my pinky in the preview in measure 30…I’m a little lost. Did I say to do it differently?
In the lesson (Chorus) you jump up to the 3rd fret with your index. last note of the F minor.
So, I tried it both ways. I know what you’re saying, but the tempo in this song is so slow, I don’t think there’s much advantage either way.
Go with what you feel works best. All I am saying is you will come across this position again and again. I am currently working on Black Mtn Rag and I am playing a similar fingering sliding 4-5 on the second using the index and fretting the 1st at the 7th with the pinkie. Earl used this a lot
I’ve been working in it in the way Ben showed. Getting it down, hopefully will be able to use it. I find sometimes it’s hard to get those things into my muscle memory.
