So when I became a gold pick member I thought I’d never learn any of the gospel songs. But over the summer I’ve accepted Jesus as my lord and saviour. Now I predominately play those Same very songs. One song I’ve always enjoyed before becoming a believer was “ run on for a long time” . There’s many great versions by people like Johnny Cash, blind boys of Alabama and Eli paperboy reed. I was hoping if Ben reads this he’d consider coming up with a version for banjo.
Didn’t think I’d ever learn the gospel songs
Hi @dagneault_glen!
You’re most definitely not alone! I’ve been enjoying the heck out of playing these old tunes. Some 40+ years ago (!!!), my dad introduced me to an Uncloudy Day as it was the last song ol’ Willie Nelson played in Honeysuckle Rose. By the way, I had to look that up! That film was released in 1980.
In the past few years, I rediscovered Johnny Cash’s My Mother’s Hymn Book and grew to love so many of the older songs on the album such as “I Shall Not Be Moved” and “I Am a Pilgrim.” These songs gave me tremendous comfort while I navigated some really difficult times – and I love re-learning them as bluegrass tunes.
In fact, there are so many great tunes I’ve heard my whole life not knowing they had origins (or previous lives) in bluegrass such as “Going Down the Road.”
Praise the Lord Glen!! Yes, it’s so amazing how Jesus can change us and give us the love for things we thought we’d never have. Glad to have you on the forum and more glad to hear you called on Christ for salvation, I did the same in 2014 and I have never regretted it!
I’ve never regretted it either! Our Savior never promised smooth sailing (in fact, just the opposite!), but we can take comfort in knowing that He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:6). Keep pressing forward!
I’ll add a hearty Amen to this thread!
@dagneault_glen, welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing.
God moves in mysterious ways, indeed!
Great news on several levels. Gospel means good news and it is always good to sing and play good news!
Wow @dagneault_glen, thanks for that testimony and praise God for the work he’s done in your heart…and fingers! I’ll check out that song!
