Clawhammer Lessons

Hi Gang, I recently discovered the clawhammer style of playing and it appeals more to my rhythmic sense of hearing and playing music. Has anyone come across clawhammer lessons on this great Site? Very 3-finger focused videos in the Banjo Lessons, which are awesome, but now I’m searching for clawhammer focused lessons.

Thanks!

Welcome James!
Ben has plans to release a clawhammer course with banjo player and luthier Dave Dillard. If I recall correctly, the course has been recorded and is set for release early next year or so.

Excellent news. I’ll be looking forward to the clawhammer course. Meantime, I better keep working on my fretboard geography! Thanks for the information.

Hi @gm.cooper2 James. Currently there are NO Clawhammer banjo Lessons on the site but I do believe @BanjoBen is planning to add lessons in the future. There have been a couple of Cabin Camps this past year where Clawhammer was taught.

Thanks Archie. I would love it if BanjoBen could add some Clawhammer lessons to this site. I really dig Ben’s style of teaching. Keeping my eyes open for a Cabin Camp experience in the future.

Hi James I don’t think @BanjoBen plays/ teaches Clawhammer, I think if he does add Clawhammer Lessons it will be a guest teacher who does the teaching. Hang around I am sure Ben will chip in when he is free to do so.

Dave Dillard was the clawhammer instructor for Banjo Camp. Katy Lou also has serious clawhammer chops. Between the two of them, I’d imagine there might be some lessons posted in the future.

I was in the Clawhammer class with Dave . We spent a lot of time going between Double C tuning (gCGCD)and Sawmill tuning - (gDCGD). For clawhammer, the modal tunings are where the magic is - at least for me.

Clawhammer has been a worthy pursuit- it’s added a lot to my bonfire repertoire. I just sit in my spot and drone on… :innocent:

Hi Andy did you get any Clawhammer TABs that you could share. I’d like to try my hand at playing something in Sawmill tuning.
