Cherokee fiddle question

This may fall into the stupid question category but here goes… In @BanjoBen lesson on Cherokee Fiddle the tab shows a chord change to E slant G sharp… Does this mean we could play one or the other? I’m struggling with the chord progression on this tune.

Hey Ron! That symbol means E over G# (an E chord with a G# note in the bass.) This is because the root note of the chord is walking down to transition to the F# chord- the walk is A, G#, F#. The E chord on top of it serves as a passing chord.
