Bluegrass'ing with the Grateful Dead

I’ve been a Grateful Dead fan for decades and when I started learning more about bluegrass, I was delighted to see guys like Billy Strings covering songs like Loser (or Wharf Rat).

I’m curious if any of you all like some of the old Dead and Dylan tunes and have found some great bluegrass-y versions of them.

PS - the one below is inspiring enough for me to want to upload a video at some point of my take on things… go Billy!

This is a more electric version of a Grateful Dead song by The Travelin’ McCourys with Sam Bush and Ricky Skaggs. I think I heard Skaggs and Bush were told the song they were joining in on not long before the set, which would be pretty azing to me.

@Simone and I have been passing back and forth messages. She and I are going to start on this one. I’ve already logged 15 hours. Break(s) start around the 5:00 mark.

I am going to learn the 1st mando break (by ear) on guitar. Then that 2nd half of the mando break I am going to make up my own. Then I will be copying the guitar break.

I’m a big Jerry Garcia fan when it comes to his ability to play guitar and chase those chord shapes up and down the neck. I can’t do it like Jerry but I am getting better every year.

If you or anyone else would like to join Simone and I then jump on in. She has not started. She and I spoke for the first time in a long time last week…time for a project!

I never liked Jerry singing “Brown Eyed Women”…but this cover of it is pretty good, does the song justice. Intro leaves a a little to be desired, but I think it’s a really good version. I think from the 4:00 mark (last verse) to the end is pretty good stuff.

I know someone that has seen every single one of those videos you linked up. Imagine that.

I have that vid of “Loser” in my “jam over” list on youtube. From time to time I just like to let my jam list play and noodle. This one just recently made it on my list to jam over. Maybe a month?

Absolutely was a pain in the neck to not get lost on rythm guitar the first few times through. Once I got my ear wrapped around it things went better. Can’t expect to play very good breaks/lead/jam if you can’t even play the rythm/follow the preogression while strumming.

Here you go – this may just about be the best darn thing I’ve heard in as long as I can remember. My word! This young man is really striking a chord with the music in my soul!
