Bluegrass Album - Starter Pack?

As someone who got into bluegrass later in life, I am always finding albums that I wish someone would have turned me onto sooner.

If you had a friend that just started on their bluegrass journey, what 5 albums would you say they need listen to? - Thinking more around Traditional Bluegrass

In no particular Order, this would be my current list, but curious as to what everyone else would say.

  1. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be on Broken
  2. The Bluegrass Album - The Blue Grass Album Band
  3. Bluegrass '95
  4. Skaggs and Rice
  5. J.D. Crowe & The New South - J.D. Crowe & The New South

@Archie do you have any specific Albums?

I feel like I have played a song named “On and On” at a Jam at some point

No not really I watch most of these on YouTube. Yes I do believe there is a song of that name. But I was referring to the list of artists.

Ooo it’s really hard to make a list of 5. These get gradually less traditional, but here are a bunch of my favorites… maybe y’all can help me pick:

The Bluegrass Album Band— Vols. 1-4
J.D. Crowe & The New South— Self-titled (A.K.A. “Old Home Place” A.K.A. “0044”)
Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver— “Rock My Soul”, “There’s a Light Guiding Me”, “The Gospel Collection”, “Live in Prague”
Lonesome River Band— “Carrying the Tradition”, “Heyday”
Blue Highway— “Still Climbing Mountains”
Balsam Range— “Papertown”, “Five”
Tony Rice— "Manzanita, “Cold on the Shoulder”, “Native American,” “Me and My Guitar”
New Grass Revival— “Best Of”, “On the Boulevard”, “Live”
Nickel Creek— “Nickel Creek”, “This Side”, “A Dotted Line”
Punch Brothers— “Hell on Church Street”, “Who’s Feeling Young Now?” “The Phosphorescent Blues”

This is why I need you all to educate me… I had no idea that there were multiple volumes for The Bluegrass Album Band! Forgive my Bluegrass Ignorance… LOL This is why I need 5 to keep from getting overwhelmed.

You might get the Banjo Radio app. Kyle Cantrell does a good job of mixing new bluegrass with the classics.

Go check out Headin’ Home! (I think that I’ve become their unofficial advertising agent!) @Luke_L, @Timothy_L, @Flatpickin_Libby, @Lucy_L, and their parents have a couple of albums and are working on a new one. They do a great job.

Also, the Bontrager Family Singers are a good group, too!
