Great discussion. I could not have had the career I did (programmer) If I were born much later than when I was. AI is amazingly powerful. It is also simple. It just does a mind blowing number of iterations of analysis at what we once thought unachievable speeds. Right now it is by brute force through a multitude of large datacenters, but tech is growing at lightning speed. We are just at the start of this technology and it has already made my career headed towards obsolescence.

I know people call some of the content AI slop (and I agree that this bad content is oddly offensive), but I think and fear that the time is coming soon where AI is capable of many types of content whose source cannot be determined by the general public. I think we may already be there, but much of what see is just just very crappy. This scares me.

I think AI may likely prove to a be profound negative for the world. Like to a point where the previously mentioned “Wargames” or “Terminator” are thought in the future to be amazingly predictive movies. There is chance for great good (such as the ending of certain prevalent diseases) but the general effect will be a world that is ultimately less ideal for humanity. I heard this week that a survey revealed that 10% of gen Z reported zero face to face interactions on an average day. I don’t like where we are headed. I may sound like the wagon wheel maker complaining about the explosion of motorized travel, but the direction of society gives me very little hope for the world (and AI is just one factor). Good thing I am not supposed to look to the world for hope.

One aspect I forgot to mention that really bothers me is the quality and bias of what AI gets trained with… garbage in, garbage out.

It sounds like a scene from a science fiction movie, but there is a test that is used (don’t remember what it is called) to rate AI. At the highest level, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference if you were communicating with an AI or a person. The AI would learn slang, have a sense of humor, and be able to rationalize responses. I read where people already have AI “girl friends” or “boy friends”. When the AI develops self consciousness, then can it feel love or hate? Ultimately, it decides we are a threat and eliminates us.

It’s called a Turing test… and we’re basically there. I heard a recorded conversation of an AI bot taking pizza orders over the phone. On this particular call, they were trying to get the caller to stay on the line long enough to tell it wasn’t a human. I think it took over 5 minutes before the guy started realizing something wasn’t right.

If it’s a companion AI, the users already know it’s not human and they just don’t care. Not hard to see how this could lead to societal collapse.

I ran across the below Youtube video today when I was looking at something else on the internet. His title of the video is a joke, he is exposing what others do just to get clicks, This is a British musician that generally does reviews of other musicians’ performances, including country performers, on Youtube. However, in this video (15 minutes long), he shares his thoughts, disdain actually, the same dislike a lot of us have, about the copping of creative works used to train AI (for music, millions of songs) that users then can type in a few words as prompts, then AI kicks out a professional sounding song, and then users (some or many) pass off as them creating the song. He makes this specific point toward the end of the video. The beginning and middle of the video, he tells the audience of a silent protest video of nothing (literally a silent video) he is going to do (which now has already happened) that he released at a specific time and asked his audience to click on that video at the appointed time so that the Youtube algorithm would pick it up and recommend it to the feeds of others. I would never do something like that, but he appears to be annoyed and moved to do that as a silent protest. His thoughts has expanded and clarified my own perspective on the topic.

Fil from Wings of Pegasus rally is a very knowledgeable person. Even when angry he remains calm, rational & thoughtful. He does excellent jobs at reviewing artists techniques.
Try to slip auto-tune past him and he will catch it asap!
And AI “music” represents all that is evil with technology.
