Anyone else struggle with Arkansas Traveler? I struggle with these fiddle tunes, I think in part because I’m not familiar with them. I can’t really hum the tune in my head as I play. I grew up on mostly bluegrass gospel.

Im in the same boat. Sarah, the bass player with the Purple Hulls, couldn’t believe some of the bluegrass standards I don’t know at camp last month. I told her I’m kind of a bluegrass newb. I was raised on nothing but gospel music. We didn’t listen to any kind of secular music growing up.
Maybe because of that, I find that when I want to learn a song, especially one of Ben’s lessons, I have to download the MP3 of what it’s supposed to sound like before I even think of starting on the lesson.
That’s actually an important part of the learning process. Once your mind knows which notes are next, your fingers start learning where certain notes are without thinking about it.
