Doing that kind of singing for a crowd seems like it’d be more scary (to me anyway) than playing an instrument for folks. Way to go

Just the psychological aspect of having other people performing with you really helps with relaxation. When it’s just you, you’re responsible for 100% of the performance. The hardest performance is a song by yourself; the easiest is congregational singing with literally everyone performing with you. (Yes, technically that’s still a performance).
