Why are Bagpipes described as A Weapon of War ?

The use of bagpipes in wars is believed to have originated from the Battle of Culloden whereby Scottish Pipers would play war tunes while marching their troops into battle . Since the Highland Regiment never went to battle without a piper, the bagpipes in turn become known as both an instrument and a weapon of war.

Was playing the bagpipes once banned in Scotland?

There was a ban on playing of the bagpipes after Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite uprising of 1745 . They believed it to be an act of treason against the king who was English. Many chose to play the pipes in secret, risking the harsh punishment if someone was to hear.

Interesting. Who would have thought playing an instrument could be considered treasonous.

How would that be possible? Every time I’ve heard them, they’re quite loud. Is there a mute of some sort?

A chanter (link below) But if you watch the video above you’ll hear the women keeping the pipe music alive with mouth music 14.31 This is how a lot of Scottish & Irish fiddle & pipe music found it’s way to Appalachia
