5th string banjo capo

Im a total newbie and got a new banjo & need to get either spikes or a Shubb capo put on. Is one preferred over the other? Someone just l tell me which one I should get.
I’m not capable of making any banjo decisions right now. :woman_shrugging:t2:
Thanks!

I have had a shubb capo, a strum hollow capo, and spikes. The shubb was kind of ugly and I would catch my hand on it. The strum hollow works, but it is fiddly, and if I am trying to capo up in a jam, I want to be as fast as possible so people aren’t waiting on me. The spikes are simple, effective, and inconspicuous, and they are my favorite these days.

I would go for spikes every time.

I agree with @Michael_Mark spikes are the way to go

Ditto on the spikes, but also keep a Strum Hollow around just in case it’s in a key I haven’t installed a spike on that fret. They’re cheap enough.

I have a Strum Hollow, but spikes are definitely preferable. I was just nervous to drill into my banjo :joy: I’ll probably just buy my next banjo from Ben so it’ll come with spikes haha.

Having someone drill on my banjo makes me a bit nervous too . Like what if they mess it up? Lol!
Thanks for your input.

When you mentioned the word Strum Hollow I looked it up and apparently I have one. I bought it at the last cabin camp but put it aside because I wasn’t playing banjo yet. Yay! I have one. Thanks!!

I had a Strum Hollow but had Justin at the General store put on spikes. They’re my preference.

I wasn’t worried about someone else doing it, I was just worried that I would mess it up myself :joy: Usually the people who do it for you would be professionals at setup and such, so I wouldn’t worry about that.
