I’m going to put in a plug for Billy Strings, first time I heard him was blown away, and he has only gotten better, so I have him in my top five, but that’s just me, maybe is not for everyone, as has been stated here already that everyone has their own styles they like. That’s why I’m good with whoever wins. One thing I like is he seems to draw from lot of styles that he incorporates into his bluegrass playing. Turmoil & Tinfoil is legendary, but then again just my own opinion.
As far as any type of drug culture, not sure of Billy’s habits, but if he did indulge, I wouldn’t hold it against his music, but would be scared for him, and would hope any musician or other person would seek help if that was the road they had chosen, and yes, I believe it is a choice more than a disease, but that is another topic altogether.
As far as his original music great also although, I see tinges of leftist’s beliefs in his lyrical content, which I personally don’t ascribe to, but I try and separate that from the music. Many left leaning musicians whose music I like but disagree with their world view.
I know probably Christians here who are conscious of curse words, and I respect that, but personally grant some leeway in that area provided it doesn’t descend into shock vulgarity. Never been to one of Billy’s shows to see how far he takes that but will take people’s word here who have posted about it.
Anyway, lots of good opinions and one thing we can all agree on is a great list of talent up for the award all being fantastic players.
