Whatcha Working On?

Maybe I can get Ben Morren on piano and/or one of the other 5000 instruments he plays. We could do some of that Native American sounding stuff.

Are you writing songs?

He sounds like a “multitude instrumentalist”!

I need to work harder on it! But yes, I’ve been trying. I haven’t actually finished a song yet though.

I can play mandolin for you. My accordion skills, alas, are not quite snuffy, but I can shred FMB on harmonica…

Resurrecting this thread! What’s everybody working on? Any New Year goals?

I’ve been working on a bunch of Scott Vestal and Ron Block banjo licks, they play a lot of cool stuff. Also working on some Tony Rice solos on guitar.

Joining a local jam group has really helped rekindle my passion for playing banjo. One unexpected benefit is that it has forced me to work on lessons I didn’t care to work on. Angeline the Baker is a prime example of that. I’ve never really cared for that song, but it’s played every week at the jam, so I made myself work on that lesson. Now I love playing it!

Silent Night Crosspicking. Don’t think I’ll be where I want to be by Christmas.

Trying to pick and find the drive. I’m using Dark Hollow. Still working on backup beyond the vamp. It’s improving, slowly.

:+1: Good job everyone!
My day-to-day practice is varying right now, but today I worked on guitar solos for Love of the Mountains and What a Day That Will Be. I’m working on Studebaker too. I had a lot of practice time today - several hours - which was fun.

I’ve been trying to incorporate some of those pull-offy things like Pat Flynn.
Also, I’ve been transcribing various breaks on Soundslice and have been finding that an enjoyable task!

I might have jumped in a bit deeper that I was ready for, but I’m working on Silent Night in G (Intermediate) on the mandolin. I only know five songs so far, and have been on this one for two weeks now. Hopefully, I’ll have it pretty enough to play for the mrs. (and in-laws) in two days. The notes are easy enough. It’s just emphasizing the waltz that’s a beast…

You’ll get it, @situationnormal.71! And even if you don’t work it up to your expectation, the challenge you’ve taken will do you a lot of good both now and down the road.

@situationnormal.71 I haven’t heard your practice but I’ve come to the conclusion that I have confidence that everyone on this forum will pick just the right notes in time when they need it. Good luck, I’m sure your audience will enjoy!

Needed some lowkey guitar music for a video and decided to just record some myself. Here’s “Wayfaring Stranger”, jazzed and in 6/8. (99.9% of these licks are Certified Stolen From Tony Rice®.)

(I had to reduce the audio quality to upload to the board)

Man, killer stuff @Michael_Mark!! That tone is slammin!

Sounds great! You sound exactly like Tony Rice. Seriously - you play just like your hero! And there’s track 1 for the Michael Mark solo record!

Thanks Ben!! That means so much coming from you.

I don’t know about that, but honored you think so :joy:

I tried to make it sort of like Wayfaring Stranger with the “feel” of My Favorite Things.

It’ll be 41 seconds long :joy:

Not after you add the vocal verses
