Learn Banjo the EZ "Deliverence" Way!
Speaks volumes. Just goes to show the lengths Hollywood will goal to get a return on their investment. I gotta say I didn’t enjoy that movie. Poor storyline, terrible acting the only thing I did like was the music.
I wonder if a die-hard collector has that sleeve behind glass somewhere.
I think it’s a very good film. Besides introducing another generation to the banjo, it also ignited an interest in paddle sports.
The book describes the area where the paddlers set off as “the land of the nine-fingered people.” They were poor folks who never could afford anything new, and the old stuff they had was always breaking down. Just about everybody was missing a finger from trying to fix a broken machine with a broken old tool.
The movie gave me the major creeps but I recognized it for the art it was. It’s one of those that I appreciate, but never care to watch again
The book is way worse if you can believe it.
Just when I thought I was having a great day, you guys just show up and let all the air out of my balloon. I am deee pressed! Any insight as to who was wearing the right sleeve?
Al I could find is this from Snopes:
“The banjo-playing boy in the film was portrayed by Billy Redden, then an 15-year-old Georgia student. The lad was hired for the role because he fit the visual image many have of a mentally-deficient youngster and so would wordlessly communicate to the film’s audience the stereotype discussed above. He was neither slow-witted nor autistic. He also could not play the banjo. (Some camera trickery and the use of a double combined to make it appear otherwise).”
The actual banjo was from Eric Weissberg, overdubbed for the film. As usual, the doubles go unknown.
Except on the old TV show, “Fall Guy.”
