Aw, man, sorry to hear that. Computers are fun until the don’t work. If ranting helps, rant away.

It’s nice to hear a more folks that are familiar with something that not windows or a macbook. I got a Commodore 64 in 1982 and did a fair amount of programming then at university worked on a Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) Vax system then was employed do system admin work on VAXes. DEC really liked to challenge IBM as standing for “Itty Bitty Machines”

My first job was typing punch cards for an IBM computer that processed payrolls.

My wife did something similar @banjoe she was a comptometer operator doing payroll for a national bakery chain. I had worked at the bakery just before I joined the army. On my first leave before I headed oversea to Germany I had gone back to visit my friends at the bakery and that’s when we met

Big Blue was slow to the market with the Desk Top Computer - They were focused on large Mainframes and senior management didn’t see the full potential of the small workstation in the early days. Once they started networking PS2 workstations their business plan and customer base grew rapidly. And with cyber threats/ major natural disasters moved to massive business data recovery services. Their core customers were high finance mostly, retail, banking and insurance although they did partner with a third party PC company just before I left to work for Xerox

Now we’re talking!!! My dad was a programmer in the punch card days. Every year, they’d take the used punch cards and make craft-y wreaths by folding them, stapling them together and spray painting them. I wish I still had one :frowning:

My first computer was a TRS-80 model III with a whopping 16K and a cassette tape for storage. I also followed @Archie into the world of color with the Atari 800. I think next up was an Amiga (I am still impressed with what that that machine could do).

The founder of DEC Ken Olsen missed out on the PC boom and supposed said “ I don’t want to be able to seer over our computers”. I don’t know if he really saidvthstbor not.

I still have my Atari 800XL and STE trying to load a game from cassette tape was a nightmare at times. It would take ages to transfer the data and right at the last inch or two of magnetic tape it would throw up a checksum error. My youngest daughter loved ‘I think it was Bruce Lee’ she was the only one who could zip through all the levels. Things improved greatly when they brought out the floppy drives. The STE was an amazing piece of kit with the 3d Cyber Control Suite and Sculpt I just got lost in a 3d cyber world with a kaleidoscope of colour. I did connect to the Web with my 8 Bit - I discovered packet mail, FidoNet and the fact that I could converse with folk all around the world who were discovering this new method of communication - It surely was a big adventure back then. Now we take it all for granted.

Do you remember Ascii Art - I first came across this in the Army when the guys would send Christmas messages across the world on the teleprinter circuit. Back then each character was physically typed in by hand and transferred to a punch (ticker) tape to speed up the transfer process.

When Fidonet Meets the Internet 1994 some old pre-Internet technology, the world of Fidonet Bulletin Board Systems (BBSes). It was through this homebrew technology that the first widespread electronic networks were born (starting August 1986), bringing forth electronic mail, file downloads, message threads, and a crude form of social networking

Son? Is that you?
Is your mother still angry with me for taking up the banjo and running off with that Ronnie Stoneman look-alike?

Funny you should mention that. Fido is off his food and he doesn’t seem to bark any more do you think I should take him to the vet ? He hasn’t passed gas in a long while.

Old woman and her wee dug get on a bus in Edinburgh and she say’s to the driver One and the dug to Smailholm, The driver frowns and replies "smell him yer self lady. "

Ok, I’m bumping this topic because this just happened to me. Even after having auto-updates turned off my PC updated today after being started. EVERYTHING was gone. Ok no problem… i follow my advice given in my first post to this thread and I have everything again…

Now… Chrome is totally unresponsive and wont open at all on my PC. Is there anyway to fix this? After cliking the icon nothing happens. It doesn’t even show chrome in the tast manager. Any tips would be great. Such a headache.

Hi Trevor Windows 10 or 11. ?

If it was like what happened to me it was a brutal update. I even lost my pop 3 emailer and had to rebuild my main drive with fresh installs. Chrome should be easy just go to your Control Panel and uninstall any remnants of the Chrome browser. Then head over to Google and download and install the latest version of Chrome if you want it as your default browser just jump over to YouTube there are a ton of tutorials that explain the process.

My version of Windows 10 seems stable now and I have gradually restored most of the apps I had. Windows 11 is due out soon but hopefully I can decline the install.

The best tip I can offer is try to see what you can salvage. Your Docs and your Download Folders should be safe. Check your mailer that is a high priority. If you use a Pop 3 account your mail should still be secure on yourmail server. Make a list of the Apps you use. Begin by reinstalling the most important Apps you use. Take your time doing this, install one App at a time. I may take you a week or two to get back to normal. Good luck.

This bugged update seems almost criminal… I’ll take your advice and I will update you on whats going on. I appreciate you @Archie!

so many various paid for PDF files for tabs via youtube and so much content Im glad I at least got everything back but I will be buying external hard-drives going forward. I have a 16gb stick that I’m loading up after work ( i do a split double shift with a 2 hour break. currently on break)

Your welcome Trevor, I am just heading off to bed. I know this is poor advice but try to stay calm. It’s best to work with a clear head. Good night
